Quarterfinal Playoffs Are Winding Down

Playoffs are the best time of the year, next to the Finals. Every hockey fan knows that. :)

Wings swept Coyotes in 4. Great stuff. I hope their goal-tending stays in place. When Jimmy Howard's good...he's very good. Not sure about what's going on with Chris Osgood since his injury and surgery recuperation. Oh...and this was the 20th straight year that the Red Wings have made it into the NHL Playoffs. Not bad, if I say so myself. :) That's the first time in the history of any professional sport that a team has reached playoff level. Very proud occurrence, indeed.

Chicago forced Vancouver into 7-game series. What a fantastic game 6 that was! It was not fun, however, to watch Corey Schneider go down in pain and be taken from the game. It looked like he suffered a groin pull, but we shall see. It'll be interesting to see how Game 7 turns out. I love the underdog, but in this case it's Chicago. So, I don't know who to root for. I'll let the hockey gods decide. Game 7 will be a good one, irregardless of the result.

Tampa Lightning didn't fall down without fighting, either. They beat the Penguins...good for them! I'm rooting for the Lightning since not only is Stevie Y their new General Manager, but there is too much talent on that team to go down without fighting. Martin St. Louis is always fun to watch and has many Datsyukian moves hidden up his sleeve. :)

So...stay tuned for the last few games of the 2010-11 NHL Stanley Cup Quarterfinals. To say the games will be entertaining is an understatement.

Go Lightning!

One Game Down

What a great first day of the 2010-11 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs! The Wings beat the Coyotes, 4-1. Finally, a great victorious home game! And, the Canucks beat CHI, 2-0 (I believe..)
There was another game between NYR and WASH that I turned the channel on for a couple of minutes. When I turned it back on, there were 45 seconds left and talk about a major penalty. Wonder what that was all about. :?

Playoffs Coming Up!

It's coming to the best part of the season (other than the Finals!)...playoffs!

After being surprised and bewildered about recent Red Wings' losses, I was so hoping that the Wings would beat the Hawks in the season's finale and do their part in eliminating the Hawks from the playoffs. (As much as I loved watching the Hawks team break their 44-year old Cup draught, I don't like 'em.) The Wings did their part, alright. :)

It was up to the Dallas Stars to complete the Hawks' elimination. Stars V Wild. Couldn't wait.

The Chicago Blackhawks are in the Playoffs. :( 8th seeded team. Bummer....

Chara Hit and Potential Penalty

Last night during a game between the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens, a hit occurred that was very difficult to watch. And, we're hearing about it today since the punishment against Chara can be serious. During the game, he receive a five minute major penalty.

The hit was awful to watch. It did not look like there was any intent on Chara's side, in my opinion. It was a clean hit. His downfall is his large size, not his intent to hurt. He's too skillful for that.

The Montreal player, Pasceretti (sp?) has suffered a fractured cervical vertebrae, C4, and a concussion.

A hearing is taking place today, March 9th, to determine punishment against Chara.

Great Hockey Night...

Last night was one of the best night's of hockey in a long time..probably the best this 2010-11 season, in my opinion. First, there was the game between the Detroit Red Wings V Ottawa Senators which went back and forth with quick scoring. Franzen scored FIVE goals...wow!! What a fun game to watch.

Then, I hear about a goalie fight during the Pittsburgh Penguins game. I caught the highlights on the NHL Network. What entertainment! :) And, the Pittsburgh goalie was interviewed on NHL Live! earlier today and provided additional insight. Apparently, when he left-sucker punched the Ottawa goalie, he heard..."so you're a leftie, eh?" :)

Hope you had a chance to witness this fun. Then, I got onto the NHL Network to see the clip and was treated to a number of other classic goalie fights. Too cool..:)

Hoping others have had a chance to watch the 2011 NHL Skills sets during the All Star weekend. It's always fun to watch the talent level of these exceptional athletes. Actually, I find it amazing. :) this year's format of choosing the teams, setting up and participating in the skills plus watching the smiling faces all wrap into a wonderful weekend

I find this year's format much more refreshing and entertaining than prior years. Brendan Shanahan head up the organization team, from what's been mentioned on NHL Live! and NHL of the Fly...what a great job. :)

Enjoy!

Gretzky's 50th

Tomorrow, January 26, is Wayne Gretzky's 50th birthday. I just had the pleasure of listening to an interview between NHL Live! and Gretzky. It's always so informative and refreshing to listen to him talk. He's always so well-balanced, knowledgeable and pleasant to listen to. And, his passion and love for the sport still comes across. How nice..
It's hard to believe it's been 12 years since he hung his skates up professionally. His Fantasy Camp is coming up in a couple of weeks.

And....today, January 25, is Chris Chelios' birthday. He's 48. Just thought it was worth sharing. Chelios will always be a Red Wing in my mind.

Remembering Peter Puck

There has been recent talk about educating non-hockey fans into the intricacies of the game. Techniques to educate both the uninformed without insulting current fans can be a difficult issue. Not talking down to hockey fans while presenting information in an informative manner can be tricky, according to hockey talk on NHL Live!...The issue of Peter Puck came up...

I remember Peter Puck very fondly from my younger days while watching Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday nights. He was in black and white and always presented information in an entertaining and educational manner. He was on the scoreboard during intermission and breaks during live hockey games at the Joe in Detroit. Just loved watching Peter Puck!...great..:)

There's a modernized version of Peter Puck on during some NHL Network games, I believe it's during Hockey Night in Canada games. The character (Peter Puck) is in color, though. Plus, I remember his legs and arms being connected to the puck itself via thin lines. I hope I'm remembering correctly. Now...his extremities are disengaged, or not connected. Oh well...It's not the same thing, but a sign of the times. Information is presented well and I can see how non-hockey fans can learn from it.

Just remembering Peter Puck and smiling while doing it. :) Hope other hockey fans enjoy it as well.

Second Half

Now the fun starts...it's the second half of the 2010-2011 season. This is when things start to crank up and standings start to become interesting, in my opinion.

There's a neck-to-neck race going on between the hot Vancouver Canucks and my beloved Detroit Red Wings. It'll be fun to see how it all plays out. Datsyuk is out for a couple of more weeks, Modano is out and Cleary is still recuperating. All in all, the team has stepped up and played great. (OK...maybe not when they lost to the New York Islanders...of all teams..:( )..
Still....

The upcoming game between DET & VAN at VAN will be a great one. I'm so looking forward to it. The only drawback...my hours of practicing my cat calling for when Modano takes the ice are in vain...:( Oh well...

Have a great hockey day!
